~17 January 2014~ Vienna, Austria
We got to Vienna late at night on Thursday, and by the time we got to our hotel, the only place open for us to eat was Burger King. We definitely kicked off our weekend with a very cultural meal! On Saturday, Meaghan and I walked from our hotel to the city center and then explored the city center. One of her friends who was from Austria had given us key monuments and places to see, so spotted them as walked. One of my favorite places that we saw was the National Library. It was less than 5 euros to go inside, and it was absolutely amazing to see. It wasn’t huge but it was adorned with statues and painted ceilings. When we went, they were hosting an exhibit on the children of Austria throughout the decades which was interesting to see. We had been told that a traditional plate that you had to eat in Vienna was Wiener Schnitzel accompanied with potatoes, We spent a lot of time looking for it, and ended up in a cute little restaurant. I didn’t look anything up before hand, so I didn’t know what I was expecting, but it was really good! The next thing on our list was sweets. We went to an Austrian chain, called Aida, that had delicious pastries and coffee. Later that night, we met up with the rest of our group and got standing room tickets for the Opera, which were only 3 euros for balcony seats. We saw an Italian Opera called L’elisir d’amore (Elixir of Love), which they even had little screen with subtitles in English for the audience. The opera house was gorgeous.
~18 January 2014~ Salzburg, Austria
That Saturday, we woke up at like 5 am to travel to Salzburg and go on a Sound of Music tour. It was super cool because we got to different sites to where they filmed the movie. We saw a lot of places but highlights include the two houses that were used to film the outside of the Von Trapp home, the abbey, and the gazebo. Our guide told us about the real Von Trapp family, where they lived and how their story differed from the movie. It snowed that day, which was amazing to see because it was the first time I had ever seen snow fall. Once we got into the mountains, the snow had coated the tress, and everything was super beautiful. It all looked like a Christmas card. Once we travel back to Vienna, we went out to meet a couple of friends. We tried to go to a club, but it was super awkward. After a while we met up with some friends, and made new Austrian friends and when they took us to the most happenin’ place, the line was really long; and it was super late so we went back to hostel to sleep.
